“Moss Cradle” Atsei Cooper, 2/23/2024

Mosses are ancient, soft, versatile, and beautiful. Indigenous peoples have long used mosses for various reasons such as lining cradle boards, absorbing blood during moon time, insulating clothes, houses, and more. Animals and other plants also use moss to cradle their young. It is not uncommon to see mosses lining the nests of birds and holding eggs. Nor is it uncommon to see tiny green sprouts emerging from carpets of moss. "Moss Cradle" is dedicated to new life and how the mosses may gently hold it. It is dedicated to the emerging generation of Kituwah children and teaching them our long-held values of gadugi, tohi, and duyukdv. The Kituwah baby is surrounded by rattlesnake orchid, a plant I have grown to love during my time as botany intern with my tribe.
